Gordon Jenkins and His Orchestra • Soul of A People [1961] Time Records Series 2000 S/2050

If music is the universal language, there is no better proof of this than the music of the Jewish people.  Unlike most so-called national music, Jewish music is not confined to any one place, or for that matter, to any one people.  It is beloved throughout the world, its popularity crosses borders, frontiers, "curtains" of all possible political descriptions with more ease than a jet.

There are very good reasons for this universal popularity, and they lie mostly in the heart.  The immediate appeal of Jewish music may be found in its colorful mirroring of its people - the earthy humor, the passionate gaiety, the sometimes profound melancholy, but most of all in its unquenchable spirit and love of life.  In a word, in its very honesty as the expression of the soul of a people.

Musically, Jewish music is set apart from other music in its rich melodiousness (which joins the music of East and West in a piquant manner), in its captivating rhythms and rich harmonies, which draw upon the musical sounds of various nations, from the great cities of Europe and America to the villages of the Orient.  This is a unique music which combines the sophisticated with the naive, the very modern with the ancient, the rustic folk dance with the metropolitan love song.
