Thanks For The Memories [Reader's Digest 8 LP Boxset] [1978] Reader's Digest RDA-028/A (Auto Sequence)

"Through the 1930s, in the midst of the Depression, in the face of a coming World War, one thing flourished.  Musically, at least, it was a delightful decade.  Perhaps because of the very traumas the United States was experiencing, our popular music, much of it written for the Broadway stage or the Hollywood screen, became much more complex, more romantic, more sophisticated.  George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern, Lorenz Hart, Harry Warren were some who wrote the songs; Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallée sang them; Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced to them; Eddy Duchin, Benny Goodman, the Dorsey brothers, Guy Lombardo, Glenn Miller played them.  In this album are 96 of those great tunes (many of them once featured on the popular radio program Your Hit Parade, which began in 1935).  All are still fresh, all add daily to their patina of nostalgia.  We hope that if you weren't around in '30s, these songs will make you wish you had been; if you were around, we hope they'll make you say, "Thanks for the memories." " [Liner notes]
